When Dogs Need A New Home

Both Liva and Poncho had another home before they came to me. Both had a very good up bringing and they were loved and cared for. But life doesn't always go according to plan and so they came to stay with me.

I'm bringing up this subject for two reasons: first of all because more and more border collies are seeking new homes in Denmark, which was to be anticipated due to the BC puppy boom which has been going on the last couple of years. The second reason is I often read people's comments on Facebook etc. concerning those how decide to give their dog a new home and I am surprised how hostile and offensive those comments can be.

I don't think any of those comments are appropriate and it puzzles me why people even write them. They most certainly do not know the whole story and they do not know anything about how tough the decision-making process might have been.

What if the owner was brokenhearted that he had to find a new home for his beloved dog? Would you rather have him keep the dog, knowing that he under the circumstances couldn't care for it?
Acknowledging that you won't be able to keep a dog takes courage and there's is no shame in that. I believe such a decision is made with the dog's best interest at heart.

I grant you there might be people out there who doesn't really care about the dog, but they are hardly the ones paying 10.000 DKK for a puppy in the first place.

There are those who found out the hard way that a border collie was too much for them to handle, or those who's life has been turned up side down by unforeseen events - Is it appropriate to give them a hard time?

I don't know about you, but I most certainly can not look into the future. I don't know what's coming and I don't know if I someday will be forced to find a new home for one of my dogs although I sure hope I won't have to.

All I'm saying is you don't know what life brings and you shouldn't think the worst of people or jump to conclusions.

I am thankful that Poncho and Liva came to stay with me. Their previous owners have my full sympathy and understanding.
